Irish has been spoken as a native language on the outskirts of the east of Galway city for many years. The Language Planning Committee ‘An Bhruaigh Thoir’ is a voluntary group that met in 2017 to address the conservation of the East Galway Gaeltacht.
According to the 2016 Census, there are 7,800 people living in this Gaeltacht Language Planning Area (LPT), and 2.9% of the population over 3 years of age spoke Irish on a daily basis.
