At an Údarás na Gaeltachta Board meeting in Baile Bhuirne, Muscraí Gaeltacht, today (8 April), discussions took place regarding the measures undertaken by Údarás and the Board to emphasise to the Government the importance of the organisation retaining its enterprise function to promote employment in the Gaeltacht.

The chairman of Údarás na Gaeltachta, Liam Ó Cuinneagáin, informed the meeting that both he and the Chief Executive, Seán Ó Labhraí met with the Minister of State for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, Dinny McGinley T.D., to discuss the Údarás requirements regarding job creation and to present him with a copy of the INDECON economic report.

The report, compiled by INDECON international economic consultants, illustrates the significant impact of Údarás client-companies on the Irish economy, including:

  • Over 7,000 people in full time employment;
  • A contribution of €734m in sales to the Irish economy;
  • €197.6m contributed in payroll to the Irish economy;
  • €42.2m in tax repaid to the Exchequer annually.

Minister Mc Ginley said he would study the report and meet with the Údarás Board in June for further discussions.
