There was a well-attended meeting yesterday evening in Áras Inis Gluaire, at which local businesses and the general public were given information about the plans for the new tourism facility SOLAS which will open in Eachléim in July. Seán Ó Gallachóir from Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile and Joan Ní Fhathaigh, who directed the project for Údarás na Gaeltachta, explained the economic and social importance of the project, and the employment it will create, and indeed has already created during the construction phase.

Méadbh Seoighe from Údarás na Gaeltachta was able to place the new amenity in the context of Údarás na Gaeltachta’s wider vision for Gaeltacht tourism. Dáithí Ó Gallchobhair from Fáilte Ireland expanded on this theme, and the specific importance which Fáilte Ireland attaches to tourism in the Gaeltacht and on Ireland’s islands. Aoife Porter from Bua Media spoke about the best way to market the unique character of the Gaeltacht and Dave Ward from the Commissioners for Irish Lights gave an insight into the importance of the lighthouses of the peninsula and the way in could they be harnessed to enhance the tourism product of North Mayo.

Local representatives Seán Carey and Gerry Coyle thanked all present for their role in delivering the project.

The new tourism development will focus on the culture and heritage of the Mayo Gaeltacht, with specific reference to the strong connection with the sea and seafaring. The strong craft tradition of the Gaeltacht will also be showcased and there will be an emphasis on the unique ecological and environmental characteristics of the Iorras area.
