Today it was announced that the Gaeltacht is to become the first region in Ireland to join the Eurodyssey programme, Europe’s only interregional traineeship and employment programme. The announcement was made by Údarás na Gaeltachta CEO, Micheál Ó hÉanaigh, vice-president of the Assembly of European Regions, with special responsibility for Youth, Culture and Tourism, in his opening address at the AER Conference being held in Donegal this week.

He said “The Gaeltacht will welcome as many as 30 ambitious trainees from all over Europe to Ireland annually, while young people from Gaeltacht communities across Ireland will be able to apply for training opportunities in Eurodyssey’s 18 member regions. Joining Eurodyssey will strengthen our connections to our partners across Europe, build new ties within our network, and most of all provide life-changing career for the young people taking part”

“Since 1985, Eurodyssey has helped over 10,000 young people find high-quality traineeship opportunities in our member regions, giving young people a real measure of the independence that comes with working life, and helps them make the difficult transition from leaving education and joining the labour market, whatever their economic, social or cultural background. Trainees return to their home regions with international experience and ideas, human and language skills that will drive economic development and entrepreneurship in their communities. “
