Údarás na Gaeltachta have announced that they are working towards the preparation of new planning application for Páirc na Mara in Cill Chiaráin, Conamara, Co. Galway. In April, An Bord Pleanála rejected Údarás na Gaeltachta’s appeal concerning Galway County Council’s decision to refuse planning for Páirc na Mara.

Work is already underway internally towards the preparation of a new application. It is expected that a new planning application would be ready for submission before the end of 2024, a similar timescale to a judicial review of the decision of An Bord Pleanála, based on current estimates.

Údarás na Gaeltachta Chief Executive, Tomás Ó Síocháin stated:

“Údarás na Gaeltachta has examined this issue closely in the last number of weeks. In light of An Bord Pleanála’s decision, we consulted with a number of planning and legal experts, and we strongly believe that the best path for the project is a new application to the local Planning Authority.”

“We are fully committed to Páirc na Mara. It is an extremely important project for the Iorras Aithneach region, and it is crucial that it be brought to fruition, considering the national employment, research and training opportunities it would create, along with the economic benefits to the area.”

However, we must ensure that our planning approach is consistent with new climate change requirements and any other considerations that may apply. We will study An Bord Pleanála’s decision closely, to address any issues arising, and we are confident that we will be in a position to do so.”
