Ceardlann an Spidéil, one of the Gaeltacht’s most enduring centres of craft and creativity, will mark its 40th anniversary this weekend with a series of celebrations in An Spidéal, Co. Galway. The landmark milestone recognises four decades of contribution to Gaeltacht language, culture, and enterprise since the craft village was founded by Údarás na Gaeltachta in 1986.

Located in the heart of the Cois Fharraige Gaeltacht, An Ceardlann has grown into a vibrant hub of traders and artisans and serves as an exemplar of the language and craft traditions that continue to thrive in the region. It is home to award-winning businesses, including acclaimed food producer Builín Blasta, and attracts visitors from across Ireland and internationally.

The anniversary weekend, open to the public, will be launched on Friday the 19th of June by Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, Director of Regional, Community Development and Language Planning with Údarás na Gaeltachta. Basket weaving, t-shirt printing, wine tasting, photography workshops and skincare demonstrations, are among the events happening over the weekend, reflecting the breadth of talent and enterprise represented within the Ceardlann.

Andrea Rossi, an artist located in the Ceardlann, spoke about its lasting impact:

“An Cheardlann is an excellent asset for An Spidéal, and for ourselves as artists. It has given us a platform to share our craft with a larger market that we would have been unable to reach without it. Since opening my shop here, I have also had the privilege of meeting many excellent craftspeople and building a community within the village.”

“An Cheardlann has transformed an Spidéal and south Conamara since it opened in 1986.” Said Rónán Mac an Iomaire Director of Regional, Community Development and Language Planning “A community of craftspeople has been brought together in the Conamara Gaeltacht, which wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for an Cheardlann, and that community serves as a gateway into the Gaeltacht for visitors and locals alike.”

The celebrations will be attended by past and present tenants of the craft village, local community groups, residents of An Spidéal, and representatives from Údarás na Gaeltachta.
