Údarás na Gaeltachta, the regional authority responsible for the economic, social and cultural development of the Gaeltacht regions, has announced applications are now open for the second cohort of its GAIRM graduate programme.

The two-year programme combines hands-on professional experience with academic development, offering successful applicants a training contract with Údarás na Gaeltachta alongside a Level 9 Postgraduate Diploma from Atlantic Technological University.

The scheme is open to graduates of all disciplines, including business, technology, accounting, planning, project management, science, social science and communications. Applicants must be fluent in Irish and hold a Level 8 degree or equivalent.

Participants will gain professional experience across multiple departments within Údarás na Gaeltachta and can choose to be based in any of the organisation’s regional offices: na Forbacha (Galway), Gaoth Dobhair (Donegal), Béal an Mhuirthead (Mayo), Daingean Uí Chúis (Kerry) or Baile Mhic Íre (Cork).

“GAIRM is about building the leaders of the future,” said Tomás Ó Síocháin, CEO of Údarás na Gaeltachta. “We’re investing in young people who will become the managers, civil servants and decision makers of tomorrow. The demand for Irish-speaking graduates is continuously growing and GAIRM ensures we have the talent pipeline to meet that demand.”

As part of the programme, participants will complete a specially designed Level 9 Postgraduate Diploma at ATU, covering fourteen modules over two years. Topics include financial management, communications, leadership and general management skills.

“As we were putting the diploma together, we sat down with An tÚdarás so that we could get a better understanding of what was needed,” said Diarmuid Ó Conghaile, Head of Business and Accounting at ATU. “The diploma covers every subject from financial management and communications to leadership and management in general.”

Upon completion, participants will have the opportunity to pursue a Master’s in Professional Practice, Management and Development Studies (30 ECTs) over one additional semester.

The inaugural GAIRM cohort is currently more than halfway through their training contract. Niamh Ní Dhubhaigh, a Donegal native based at Údarás headquarters in Furbo, has worked across five departments during her time on the programme.

“Údarás na Gaeltachta creates a supportive work environment that emphasises innovation and continuous learning.” said Niamh ” I’ve been able to bring the skills I’ve gained in An tÚdarás with me to ATU and vice versa.”

GAIRM is now open for applications for 2026-2028.
