Innovative Language Teaching in a Bilingual Country
Údarás na Gaeltachta is a partner in the Erasmus+ project called ‘Innovative Language Teaching in a Bilingual Country’. The project will take place over a 3 year period (01/09/2019 – 31/08/2022) and aims to promote good practices in relation to the teaching of a second language. As part of the project visits will be organised to the 3 countries participating in the project, Wales, Galicia in Spain and Ireland. These visits will take place over the course of a week and visits are made to schools, cultural events and presentations from policy makers as well as participant led workshops.
There are many countries in the EU where multiple languages are spoken on a daily basis. Our focus for this project is a bilingual country – otherwise known as a country whereby two languages hold equal status, but that one language remains the main spoken language. We expect around 24 teachers and expert language advisors from our 3 regions to take part in the project (Ireland, Spain and Wales). This project will begin by researching the current methods of dual language teaching before collaborating to produce guidelines on how to fully integrate a simultaneous approach to bilingualism. It will trial these materials and look at impact on the foreign language being taught.
