Gaeltacht-based waste processing leader’s €6.2m New Zealand contract and North American partnership highlight regional capabilities

Údarás na Gaeltachta has welcomed the significant international successes achieved by client company Turmec Teoranta, demonstrating the global competitiveness of Gaeltacht-based enterprises.

Turmec has secured a €6.2 million contract with Dunedin City Council in New Zealand, partnering with The Environmental Group Limited to supply specialist sorting machinery for a new materials recycling facility at Green Island Resource Recovery Park.

The Rathcairn-based company will design and deliver advanced optical sorters to efficiently separate paper, cardboard, metals, and rigid plastics from mixed recycling streams, including all associated infrastructure for power supply and operator safety.

Turmec has also announced a strategic partnership with Viably, a leading North American waste processing equipment supplier, to provide integrated waste management solutions to the construction and demolition sector across the United States and Canada.

The partnership combines Turmec’s engineering expertise with Viably’s equipment portfolio, including high-torque shredders and ballistic separators, helping businesses maximize resource recovery and reduce landfill dependency.

“With over five decades of experience in recycling engineering, Turmec is committed to delivering sustainable, future-proof solutions that reduce carbon impact and deliver real economic value for communities,”

said Turmec CEO Geoff Bailey.

Viably President Brandon Lapsys added: “Our partnership with Turmec highlights our commitment to empowering clients with advanced stationary plant systems while delivering innovative and tailored service.”

Dearbháil Ní Chualáin, Stiúrthóir Fiontraíochta, Fostaíochta, Maoine agus Innealtóireachta at Údarás na Gaeltachta, commented:

“Turmec’s international success exemplifies the world-class capabilities within our Gaeltacht communities. These contracts demonstrate how companies rooted in the Gaeltacht can lead globally while maintaining their commitment to local community and the Irish language.”
