We at Údarás na Gaeltachta are pleased to support the efforts of the Donegal Tweed Association to obtain Protected Geographical Status for Donegal Tweed from the European Union.

The tweed industry has been interwoven with the history and culture of the area for more than a hundred years, and is a central part of Donegal’s creative economy.

Up to 250 people are currently employed in this industry, and the special skills are being passed down from generation to generation in Ardara, Kilcar and Glencolmcille.

We strongly believe that this Protected Geographical Status will ensure a viable future for the industry and will stop fake products from China, Europe and further afield.
We hope that this special recognition will be in place soon after December 1, when the new registration system will have begun.

We congratulate the tweed industry in Donegal for their ongoing efforts to preserve and promote this important heritage around the world.
