Údarás na Gaeltachta is proud to announce its participation in Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024, taking place from October 14th to 20th. This annual event showcases Ireland’s rapidly growing bioeconomy and its potential to create a greener, more sustainable future for our communities.

Demonstrating Biobased Solutions for a Greener Ireland

This year’s theme, “Demonstrating Biobased Solutions for a Greener Ireland,” highlights the innovative ways in which Ireland’s natural resources can be utilized sustainably to achieve a fair and prosperous society. Údarás na Gaeltachta is excited to join a broad range of stakeholders from across Ireland’s bioeconomy sector in sharing knowledge and demonstrating the practical applications of biobased solutions.

Máire Ní Einniú Feidhmeannach Forbartha, Údarás na Gaeltachta said:

” The bioeconomy provides opportunities for place-based jobs, creating employment rooted in local natural resources and fostering community retention. Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024 presents a unique opportunity for our Gaeltacht communities to showcase their innovative approaches to sustainable resource management. Our regions are rich in natural resources and traditional knowledge, which, when combined with modern bioeconomy practices, can drive sustainable economic growth while preserving our cultural heritage. This event allows us to demonstrate how the Gaeltacht can lead the way in creating a greener, more prosperous Ireland.”

Dr Majbritt Bolton-Warberg, Blue Economy Programme Manager with the Marine Institute highlights the crucial role of Ireland’s marine resources in the bioeconomy:

As an island nation, Ireland’s vast marine resources play a pivotal role in our bioeconomy. The events taking place during Bioeconomy Ireland Week will highlight some of the innovative work being done in the blue bioeconomy – from oyster production to aquaponics. Gaeltacht communities have a long tradition of working in the marine sector and the bioeconomy is opening up exciting new possibilities for sustainable economic development that respects our ocean ecosystems.

A Collaborative Effort

Bioeconomy Ireland Week is a collaborative initiative involving industry leaders, local communities, producers, researchers, and students throughout Ireland. The week-long celebration features a diverse program of events and awareness-raising activities, showcasing the latest developments in Ireland’s bioeconomy.

Gaeltacht Regions

As the regional authority responsible for the economic, social, and cultural development of Ireland’s Gaeltacht regions, Údarás na Gaeltachta recognizes the significant potential of the bioeconomy for our communities. Our participation in this event underscores our commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of our unique cultural heritage while fostering economic growth.

Call to Participate

We encourage all Gaeltacht residents, businesses, and organisations to join us in participating in Bioeconomy Ireland Week 2024. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest innovations in biobased solutions and explore how these can be applied to benefit our local communities.
