Minister of State McGinley seeks nominations to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta

Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley T.D., today (30 July 2012) announced that his Department is seeking expressions of interest from persons interested in being appointed to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta.

The Minister of State said: “I am delighted to announce today that I am beginning the appointment process to the new board of Údarás na Gaeltachta, in accordance with the provisions of the Gaeltacht Act 2012. I hope that people with the relevant qualifications and experience will apply through the expressions of interest process that I am announcing today.”

Under the Gaeltacht Act 2012, the requirement for elections to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta will be dispensed with and the number of board members will be reduced from 20 to 12 members. Under the Act, the Minister will appoint seven members, including the chairperson, to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta and five members will be nominated by county councils that have a Gaeltacht area within their jurisdiction. The term of office of members will not exceed five years.

Each person appointed to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta must have experience, or must have shown capacity, in matters relevant to its functions, including:

promotion of the Irish language and language planning;
enterprise development and employment creation;
community development; and
promotion of the arts.

In order to carry out their duties effectively, members of the board must have fluent Irish.
