The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, officially opened Phase One of the Seana Mhach Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Project today, following an investment of €500,000 through the ORIS Scheme.

Speaking at the event, Minister Dara Calleary TD said: “This project exemplifies our Government’s dedication to supporting rural and Gaeltacht communities through essential infrastructure that both serves local residents and draws visitors to experience Connemara’s natural beauty. This multi-use path demonstrates how strategic investment through ORIS (Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme) can enhance quality of life for local people while promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in our Gaeltacht region.”

Rónán Mac Con Iomaire, Regional Development Director, Community & Language Planning at Údarás na Gaeltachta, said: “This project exemplifies Údarás na Gaeltachta’s collaborative approach, working alongside government departments and community organisations to build essential infrastructure that serves Gaeltacht residents while promoting sustainable tourism. The Seana Mhach development enhances the Gaeltacht’s appeal as a place to live and work, and represents a model that the Údarás plans to replicate across Gaeltacht regions in the coming years.”

This innovative project showcases how strategic investment can deliver essential infrastructure for Gaeltacht communities while simultaneously creating sustainable tourism opportunities. The development now offers several walking and cycling loops for visitors to explore:

  • Bealach Sheana Mhach (7.00km) – 2-2.5 hour walk
  • Lúibín Loch Bhárr an tSrutháin (2.69km) – 0.75-1 hour walk
  • Lúibín Loch na mBruaichíní (3.35km) – 0.75-1 hour walk

The new paths offer wonderful views of Loch Ghleann Mhac Muirinn, the Beanna Beola mountain range, and Chuan Chasla.

Rónán Mac Con Iomaire expressed gratitude to several key contributors, stating: “We extend our sincere appreciation to the local landowners who graciously granted permission for this development, to the Department of Rural and Community Development for their essential funding support, and to Comhairle Ceantar na nOileán for spearheading the project on behalf of the Údarás.”

The new infrastructure delivers significant benefits to both the local community and visitors. Residents gain safe access to recreational facilities that promote healthy, active living in this rural setting. The development also serves as an economic catalyst, attracting tourists who will create new employment opportunities in the outdoor recreation sector while supporting local hotels, restaurants, and other food establishments.

To enhance the visitor experience, a guided audio tour will soon be available through a downloadable mobile app. This innovative feature will allow guests to simply download the app to their smartphone and enjoy a comprehensive audio tour that brings the unique character and history of this special location to life.

The project succeeded through collaboration between:

  • The Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht
