The country’s first sustainable marine Christmas tree, made entirely from recycled aquaculture and marine materials, will be lit in Páirc na Mara, Cill Chiaráin on Thursday, the 11th of December.
The Christmas tree is made entirely from recycled materials from local fish farms and marine organizations, and will be powered completley by solar panels. Fishing nets, buoys, equipment, sails from the Galway Hooker Association, and other marine gear will be used as part of the tree.
“We wanted to create an occasion that would show the world how coastal communities can be sustainable, while celebrating at the same time – a Christmas tree made from recycled materials from the sea, lit by solar energy, with no waste at all,” said Máire Éinniú, Director of Nua na Mara. “The incredible support from all of our sponsors – from large businesses to small local shops – is showing that our community is ready to advance the circular economy from sea to land.”
This is the first sustainable marine Christmas celebration of its kind in Ireland, celebrating the area’s maritime heritage and traditional sailing. Both local families and visitors are welcome!
The light-switching ceremony will take place Thursday the 11th of December at 5pm, with Christmas carols from the local women’s choir, refreshments, and a special visit from Santy.
