Údarás na Gaeltachta is pleased to announce that the “Clannad – Fifty Years in Bloom” bursary has been awarded to Gaeltacht artist Daniel De Buitléir.
This scholarship, worth €30,000, is being awarded as a tribute to the music group Clannad and to celebrate their enormous impact on Irish language affairs for over 50 years.
This bursary will enable Daniel De Buitléir to set aside time to develop new artistic work through the medium of Irish over a period of three years. The aim of the scheme is to support Gaeltacht artists in developing their artistic practice and creating new work in Irish.
Tomás Ó Síocháin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, said:
“We are delighted to award this bursary to Daniel De Buitléir. We greatly look forward to the new work he will produce, and we are certain that he will follow Clannad’s example in promoting the Irish language and Gaeltacht culture.”
Rachel Holstead, Head of Ealaín na Gaeltachta, said:
“It was a privilege for Ealaín na Gaeltachta to collaborate with Clannad and Údarás na Gaeltachta to facilitate this unique bursary. The best investment that can be made in the arts is direct investment in artists. We were encouraged by the large number, high quality, and diversity of applications for this Bursary from Gaeltacht artists and we wish Daniel, and the members of Clannad, all the best in the new chapter ahead of them.”
Pól Brennan, member of Clannad, said:
“It is a great honor for us that this bursary is being awarded in tribute to Clannad. We hope it will inspire young Gaeltacht artists to continue creating new work in Irish and promoting our language and culture throughout the world.”
Daniel De Buitléir, recipient of the scholarship, said:
“It is a great honor for me to receive this bursary. Clannad’s achievements for the Irish language and Gaeltacht music have always been a great inspiration to me. I am very grateful to Clannad for their inspiration and to the Údarás for this wonderful opportunity to develop my art and contribute to the rich heritage of the Gaeltacht.”
Údarás na Gaeltachta hopes that this bursary will inspire more Gaeltacht artists to create new work in Irish and that it will contribute to the cultural and artistic richness of the Gaeltacht.
