A current event in memory of the people of the Gaeltacht
Memorial Run 2020 was a special event held by Language Planning Officers on the 8th of November throughout the Gaeltacht in memory of the people of the community who have gone astray. The Gaeltacht community in the LPTs was invited to post a message on a virtual wall and run or walk during the event on behalf of their family and friends. It was not a competition or a challenge but a virtual event that allowed people to relax and remember their relationship with a particular person or persons. Of particular importance are events of this nature that foster a strong connection between the local community, especially during the current challenging times of the pandemic. It is also a unique opportunity to connect with a wide range of the community through the language. The Memorial Run was founded by Athletics Ireland in 2011 and took place in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.
“This was an opportunity for the community to acknowledge those who have gone astray, or who are ill, or out of town or currently struggling with the pandemic. Those people were remembered as we were out walking, alone or with family on November 8th. Our memories of them were also recorded in Irish on the virtual memorial wall.”
— Majella Ní Chríocháin, OPT na Cheathrú Rua
“Athletics Ireland is delighted to be working with the language planning officers on this event. It will give the people of the Gaeltacht the opportunity to take part in the Memorial Run in their areas and we very much welcome them.”
— Barry Pender from Athletics Ireland referring to the partnership with the Language Planning Officers.
