Following a recruitment process for the post of Chief Executive, the Board of Údarás na Gaeltachta agreed to appoint Steve Ó Cúláin as Chief Executive of the organisation, subject to completion of contractual arrangements. Steve Ó Cúláin is currently employed as Planning and Policy Manager in Údarás na Gaeltachta. He commenced working with Údarás in 1980 and since has extensive experience dealing with a wide range of projects in areas such as enterprise development, cultural tourism, community development, and language and culture activities throughout the Gaeltacht. He is originally from Bothúna, An Spidéal, Co. Galway.

Whilst announcing the appointment today, Liam Ó Cuinneagáin, Chairman of Údarás na Gaeltachta, thanked Seán Ó Labhraí for acting as Interim Chief Executive for the past 16 months.

At the meeting, the Board approved a number of projects which will lead to the creation of 73 new jobs and a total investment of €3.6 million when developments are complete. Further information on these projects will be available in due course.

In addition,

  • The Board also approved €600,000 to Comhar Naíonraí na Gaeltachta Teo to jointly fund the company’s activities. Comhar Naíonra na Gaeltachta Teo manages and administers 72 naíonraí, which cater for 984 children throughout the Gaeltacht. The company employs 127 fulltime staff.
  • A total €285,000 was approved for Óige na Gaeltachta Teo to assist the company to implement its programme of youth activities. Óige na Gaeltachta Teo provides support, development, monitoring and insurance services for youth clubs and community groups.
